2025 Tacoma Gets the Brake Upgrade It Deserves
Every build starts with a first modification. For some people, it’s suspension. For others, it’s bigger tires. This Tacoma owner went in a different direction.
After running an R1 Concepts Big Brake Kit on his previous truck, he knew exactly what he wanted for his new 2025 Toyota Tacoma. Before the bigger tires, extra gear, or future overland upgrades, he wanted the confidence that comes from a brake system built to handle more than stock.
That brought the truck into the R1 Concepts shop for a custom black and gold Big Brake Kit installation.
Why Modern Tacomas Benefit From a Big Brake Kit
The latest Tacoma is a capable truck straight from the factory, but most owners do not leave them stock for long.
Lift kits, larger tires, steel bumpers, bed racks, rooftop tents, recovery equipment, and camping gear all add weight and increase the demands placed on the braking system. Larger tires also create additional leverage against the brakes, making it harder for the factory system to slow everything down efficiently.
The result is a truck that asks more from its brakes every day than Toyota originally intended.
That does not mean the factory brakes are bad. It simply means that as the build evolves, the braking system should evolve with it.
Building Around the Truck
This particular Tacoma is already running a Dirt King Trail Runner suspension system, and the owner wanted a brake package that matched the look of the build while adding capability for future upgrades.
The solution was a custom black and gold R1 Concepts Big Brake Kit.
Up front, the truck received a six-piston setup paired with massive 365mm two-piece rotors. In the rear, a matching six-piston configuration works with 356mm two-piece rotors while retaining the factory electronic parking brake system.
The black calipers and gold accents tie directly into the suspension components underneath the truck, creating a setup that looks intentional rather than added on as an afterthought.
More Than Just Looks
The color combination gets attention, but the real benefit is performance.
A larger rotor provides more leverage and greater heat capacity. More rotor mass means more ability to absorb and dissipate heat during repeated braking events.
The six-piston calipers increase clamping force and distribute pressure more evenly across the brake pad surface. That translates to improved pedal feel, more consistent braking, and better control when the truck is loaded down with gear.
For a daily-driven truck, the difference is noticeable.
For a future overland build carrying extra weight, the benefits become even more important.
Ready for What Comes Next
One of the most interesting parts of this build is that it is not finished yet.
Today, the Tacoma serves as the owner’s work truck. Tomorrow, it may be carrying a rack, rooftop tent, tools, recovery gear, and larger tires.
That is exactly why the owner chose to upgrade the brakes now.
Rather than waiting until the truck feels overwhelmed by added weight, the foundation is already in place. The braking system is prepared for whatever comes next.
Built to Fit Your Build
Every R1 Concepts Big Brake Kit is built around the vehicle and the owner’s goals.
Rotor sizing, caliper configuration, colors, finishes, and hardware can all be tailored to fit the build. Kits are designed as complete bolt-on solutions and include everything needed for installation while maintaining key factory functions like the electronic parking brake found on modern trucks.
Whether you are building a daily driver, an overland rig, or something in between, the right brake setup should be part of the plan from the beginning.
