Shopping for a brake kit starts with one decision: are you replacing the pads and rotors in your existing brake system, or changing the system itself? Both are sold as brake kits, but they solve different needs and involve different fitment checks.

A pad-and-rotor kit can refresh the brakes you already have. A big brake kit adds a different caliper-and-rotor setup for a compatible application. Choose the type of kit first, then select the components for your vehicle and how you use it.

When a pad-and-rotor kit makes sense

If your current brake system suits your vehicle and the calipers are working properly, a kit with replacement pads and rotors is a practical place to start. It keeps the existing brake layout while letting you choose the pad formulation and rotor design available for that application.

R1 Concepts lists kits with different combinations of pads, rotors, hardware and wear sensors. For example, the catalog offers blank-rotor kits with R1 CERAMIC, R1 CERAMIC European, R1 OPTIMUM OEp and R1 PERFORMANCE Off-Road/Tow pads. Availability depends on the vehicle. Read the selected listing rather than assuming every kit includes the same parts.

When to consider a big brake kit

Larger rotors can add thermal capacity to help manage the heat from repeated braking. A big brake kit combines the rotors with calipers and mounting brackets designed for that application, making it a more involved change than replacing the original-size wear components.

Consider a big brake kit when your goals call for a change beyond replacement wear parts. That might be a performance build with greater demands during repeated braking, or a custom build planned around a different caliper-and-rotor package. Explain those goals to R1 so the kit can be matched to the vehicle and its intended use.

The R1 Forged Series Big Brake Kit uses forged aluminum calipers and two-piece rotors. R1 lists 4-, 6- and 8-piston caliper options, along with different rotor sizes, designs and finishes. These are application-dependent choices, so confirm the available configuration for your vehicle.

A larger kit is a system decision. Piston count, rotor appearance or a wheel-diameter number alone does not tell you whether a kit is the right fit. Discuss the complete setup, including wheel clearance and the intended pad compound, before ordering.

What is actually included in the kit?

For pad-and-rotor kits, check whether the package covers the front axle, rear axle or both. Then verify the included pads, rotors, hardware and sensors. A product photo can illustrate a kit family; the selected part listing determines what you receive.

R1’s Forged Series BBK page lists brake pads, calipers, rotors, mounting brackets and stainless steel brake lines. Confirm the quoted kit’s axle coverage, specifications and installation requirements. A front BBK is not automatically a four-wheel package.

Five checks to make before ordering

1. Identify the exact vehicle and brake package

Start with year, make and model, then read every application note. Trim, drivetrain, production date or an optional factory brake package can change the required parts. If the vehicle has a previous brake conversion, its original year and model may no longer identify the brakes fitted to it.

2. Confirm the axle and component sizes

Check front versus rear coverage and any listed rotor-diameter or brake-system qualifiers. Match replacements to the brakes actually on the vehicle. Do not select a larger rotor by itself and assume it will work with the existing caliper and bracket.

3. Check wheel clearance for a BBK

Wheel diameter is only the starting point. The barrel, spoke shape, offset and backspacing all affect clearance around a larger brake package. R1 offers a wheel-fitment template on request. Use the template for the proposed kit and confirm the actual wheels before purchase, including clearance for wheel weights. Do not assume spacers solve every fitment issue.

4. Verify hardware, sensors and parking-brake requirements

Check the contents list for clips, wear sensors, brackets and other required pieces. For a rear brake change, confirm how the kit works with the vehicle’s parking brake, including an electronic parking brake where fitted. Resolve missing parts and compatibility questions before installation day.

5. Compare the installed cost

Include installation labor, any required fluid service, additional hardware and any wheel changes needed for clearance. For a BBK, also ask about replacement pads and rotor rings so you understand future maintenance costs. Compare packages with the same axle coverage and included parts.

Choose the pad and rotor combination after fitment

Once the kit fits, choose the friction material and rotor design for your priorities. Noise, dust, operating conditions and repeated braking demands all matter. R1 offers different pad lines for daily driving, performance street use, European applications and towing or off-road use; those names describe different intended uses.

For a closer look at those choices, read How to Choose Brake Pads and Rotors for Your Driving Style. For track use, confirm the proposed kit and pad compound with R1 rather than treating a street upgrade as a competition setup.

Plan installation and break-in

Before fitting new parts, have the existing system inspected for worn or sticking components, leaks and other causes of poor braking. A kit should be selected after the condition of the system is understood.

Follow the vehicle service information, the instructions supplied with the kit and R1’s current break-in guidance. Confirm the correct procedure for the parts you select. A BBK installation may require additional work beyond a pad-and-rotor replacement.

Common brake-kit questions

Does every brake kit include calipers?

No. A pad-and-rotor kit normally retains the existing calipers. A big brake kit replaces calipers as part of the package on the covered axle. Check the actual contents list before ordering.

Do I need to replace the front and rear together?

That depends on the condition of both axles and the proposed setup. Inspect all four brakes and confirm the package’s axle coverage. For a BBK, ask R1 to confirm the intended front-and-rear combination for your vehicle.

Will a big brake kit automatically shorten stopping distances?

Kit size alone does not determine stopping distance. Tires, road conditions and the condition and suitability of the complete brake system all matter. Choose a kit to address a specific need rather than relying on a blanket promise of shorter stops.
