Because brakes aren’t the only thing we know how to do
When you think R1 Concepts, you probably think brakes, undercar projects, and high-performance stopping power. And you’d be absolutely right. But this week, we decided to show you another side of the shop.
Rex from the R1 Crew tackled a new kind of install: replacing the ancient, glitchy stock head unit in our shop 4Runner with a large touchscreen system from DASAITA. Was it smooth? Not exactly. Was it entertaining and worth it? 100 percent.
Meet the Problem: Our 4Runner’s Head Unit Was DOA
If you’ve ever dealt with a freezing, unresponsive, or outdated stock stereo, you’ll relate. Our 4Runner’s head unit had been giving us issues for years, so we finally decided to do something about it.
We hit up our friends at DASAITA, and they came through with their G13 Android head unit. It’s a plug-and-play upgrade with all the essential features:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Built-in amplifier with DTS audio
- Steering wheel control compatibility
- Backup camera support, plus options for front and side cameras
It brings modern convenience and tech to an older platform.
The Install: Kind of a Team Effort
The install wasn’t flawless. After Rex and Eric got started, things took a turn. At one point, the screen refused to power on. The official diagnosis from Rex:
“Eric broke it.”
Thankfully, Adam from DASAITA came through to help at R1 HQ, walking us through the setup and explaining what the unit can do.
The Result: Worth Every Minute
Once the install was complete, the transformation was obvious:
- Touchscreen is clean and responsive
- Factory steering wheel controls and backup cam still work
- Interior looks significantly better
- Wireless CarPlay runs smoothly
- You can even watch movies on your lunch break
For anyone who wants modern features without buying a new vehicle, this upgrade makes a noticeable difference.
Why We’re Sharing This
We are best known for our brake kits, rotors, and pads like the eLINE Series or GEO-Carbon Series. But the R1 Crew is not afraid to take on new challenges, even if it means struggling through a head unit install on camera.
Comfort and control matter. While your brake setup keeps you safe and in control on the road, tech upgrades like this one can improve your in-car experience every day.
Final Thoughts
Thanks again to our friends at DASAITA for supplying the G13 head unit for the R1 shop 4Runner. If your vehicle’s electronics are outdated or unreliable, this is a great way to bring your interior up to speed with today’s features.
