Overlanding Upgrade: R1 Concepts Jeep Gladiator Gets Sherpa QD HD Roof Rack and Rooftop Tent

Total Overland Vibes: The R1 Gladiator Levels Up

Even though Rex might have stumbled through the intro of this install video, he totally redeemed himself with one of the cleanest mods yet. This week, he installed a Sherpa QD HD Series Roof Rack on the R1 Concepts Jeep Gladiator.

This is not just another bolt-on accessory. It marks a new chapter in the Gladiator’s evolution from a trail-capable rig to a full-on overland build. The R1 Jeep is already used for shows, crawling, and more, and now it is ready to tackle remote camping and extended trips.

Sherpa QD HD Series Roof Rack: Why We Chose It

Sherpa Equipment Co. provided their QD HD Series Roof Rack, and it fits our needs perfectly. The quick disconnect feature makes it possible to remove the roof rack and top in minutes. That flexibility is important when you’re running different setups depending on the terrain and destination.

This rack offers a solid platform for mounting gear and accessories, including our Starlink system and additional area lighting. It also allows us to continue running a rack even if we decide to go without a roof.

Pro Tip: This rack works even when the roof is off, making it ideal for both summer runs and all-season builds.

OVS Rooftop Tent and Awning Install

After the roof rack was installed, we mounted the OVS (Overland Vehicle Systems) rooftop tent and a 270-degree awning. These upgrades were essential for converting the Gladiator into a legitimate overlanding platform.

The rooftop tent deploys quickly and is built for remote environments. The awning offers extended shade coverage, which is crucial for long days on the trail. Both components mount securely to the Sherpa rack, giving us a compact and reliable setup.

Why Upgrading for Overlanding Matters

When building for overlanding, every component plays a part in comfort, safety, and capability. Modular roof racks and rooftop tents not only improve storage and shelter but also help make longer trips more manageable.

The Gladiator is still running R1 GEO-Carbon Series Drilled & Slotted Brake Rotors along with R1 PERFORMANCE Off-Road/Tow Series Brake Pads, which provide dependable stopping power even with added weight and elevation changes.

Why We Love This Build

This build reflects how we approach every project at R1 Concepts. It’s built with intention, tested in real conditions, and designed to perform. With the Sherpa rack, OVS tent, and R1 performance braking system, this Gladiator is fully equipped for adventure.
