Inside Wekfest 2025 San Jose: Speed Element’s R1-Equipped Honda S660

WEKFEST San Jose with Phuong and His Custom Honda S660

If you were at WEKFEST 2025 in San Jose, you likely spotted one of the most unique cars on the floor: a right-hand-drive Honda S660 from Japan. Built by Phuong of @speedelement, this kei-class roadster turned heads with its aggressive stance, detailed modifications, and most importantly, an R1 Concepts brake system that delivers far more stopping power than the car will ever need. It’s a compact build that proves performance and aesthetics can go hand in hand.

The R1 Setup: Forged Series Big Brake Kit and More

Phuong chose the R1 Concepts 4 Series Big Brake Kit, a system built for enthusiasts who expect more from their brakes. His setup includes R1 rotors and pads, precision-fit brackets, and a custom e-brake adapter. Originally planning to bring the car to R1 HQ for scanning and bracket fabrication, Phuong was relieved to learn R1 already had a bracket ready to go, streamlining the entire install.

“The hardest part,” he said, “was figuring out the e-brake situation. We had to get a custom adapter, but the good news is that R1 already had the bracket we needed, which saved a ton of time.”

With a four-piston caliper up front and six-piston in the rear, the S660 now delivers confident, touch-sensitive braking. “You basically tap on the brake and it’s stop-ready.”

This setup is ideally paired with R1 GEO-Carbon Series Drilled & Slotted Brake Rotors for improved heat dissipation and bite, and R1 CERAMIC Series Brake Pads, which offer low dust output and quiet, consistent performance.

Brake Components: What Makes the Difference

When upgrading your braking system, every component plays a critical role. Pads are your first point of contact, and R1 Concepts pads are engineered to reduce noise, dust, and wear while maintaining consistent stopping power. On the rotor side, slotted and drilled designs help with cooling and reduce brake fade, especially under aggressive or repeated braking.

Whether you’re pushing your car through twisty backroads or showing off at an event, the right brake combo enhances both safety and control.

Building Around the Brakes

Beyond braking performance, Phuong’s S660 build includes a widebody kit, air suspension, fresh wrap, and forged wheels. The car rides on a 19×10.5 +15 square setup, made staggered with spacers to accommodate the wider brake calipers.

This wasn’t just a bolt-on project. It was a carefully thought-out build with everything engineered to clear the 4 Series BBK while keeping a clean aesthetic. Previously static, the car is now bagged and dialed in perfectly. “I’m on that two-kid budget,” Phuong joked, “but the results made it worth it.”

Stopping Power You Can Feel

Upgrading to a big brake kit is not just about how it looks. Larger rotors, high-performance calipers, and better pad compounds allow for shorter stopping distances, improved pedal response, and more precise control. Whether you’re daily driving or hitting an event, an R1 BBK transforms your vehicle’s performance and driving feel.

Brakes should never be an afterthought. They are a performance upgrade that improves your connection with the car.

Why Brake Upgrades Matter, Even for Show Cars

Phuong’s S660 proves that even show builds benefit from real performance. While many owners focus on styling and stance, having a quality braking system like R1’s improves confidence and control behind the wheel. Plus, it completes the look behind a great wheel setup.

R1 Concepts offers everything from OE replacement pads to track-ready systems, helping you match your build goals and your budget.

Customization Options for the Ultimate S660 Look

For Honda S660 owners and JDM fans, a brake upgrade boosts stopping power while adding serious visual appeal. R1’s selection of caliper and rotor options gives you plenty of flexibility to match your styling preferences, whether you want a bold anodized finish or something more stealthy.

Proper fitment is critical, especially on smaller platforms. Spacers, brackets, and careful wheel selection all play a role. R1 makes the process easier by offering solutions for even the most unique builds.

What Sets NorCal Apart

When comparing NorCal to SoCal, Phuong noticed a key difference. “Almost every car here is painted. In SoCal, it’s all wraps. That really stood out to me.” The attention to finish and craftsmanship in San Jose made this show feel next level, and the R1-equipped S660 fit right in.
