Steel Bender Trail at Moab: R1 and Nitto at Easter Jeep Safari

Steel Bender is one of Moab’s most iconic trails, and Easter Jeep Safari is when it gets tested hardest. R1 Concepts headed out with Nitto Tire for a full day on the trail, and after several days of rain, the conditions were something else. More rutted, more unpredictable, and exactly the kind of run that separates a solid rig from a winch workout.

Steel Bender After the Rain

The trail had eroded considerably since the last run. Recent storms carved new ruts and turned what was already a challenging descent into something that demanded a group decision at the top. Nobody was getting pushed past their comfort zone, but they were definitely getting pushed to it. The whole crew checked in before each major obstacle, keeping it smart and keeping it moving.

The Drop That Made Everyone Think Twice

There’s a section on Steel Bender where the drop is steep enough that you’re doing the math on your wheelbase before you commit. For the short-wheelbase rigs in the group, including an LJ with soft leaf springs and not much weight in the bed, that math gets complicated fast. The back end wants to go light, and light means unpredictable. A winch line gives you options when the trail doesn’t.

Rex and the Winch

Let’s just say the winch got used. Rex won’t exactly volunteer that information, but the trail didn’t give him much choice. That’s not a knock, that’s what recovery gear is for. Everyone who wheeled Steel Bender that day came out the other side, and that’s what matters. Nitto’s lineup held up through every obstacle, and the crew kept the good energy going the whole run.

Why Brakes Matter on Trails Like This

Off-road wheeling puts a different kind of stress on your brakes than highway driving does. On a trail like Steel Bender, you’re constantly modulating brake pressure on steep descents, holding position mid-obstacle, and managing heat in slow, technical sections. A fade or spongy pedal out there isn’t just inconvenient — it changes what you can safely attempt. R1’s slotted rotors and high-temp pads are built for exactly this kind of punishment, which is part of why they keep showing up on rigs at Easter Jeep Safari.
