Moab Off-Road Event Wrap-Up: R1 Concepts Hits the Red Rocks with @Mambaflex_jlu and the NATO Pit Crew

From Heat to Hero Moments: R1 Takes on Metal Masher

There’s no backdrop quite like Moab, Utah—red rocks, brutal climbs, scorching heat, and a trail lineup that keeps even the most seasoned off-roaders on their toes. R1 Concepts spent several days carving through this off-road paradise, teaming up with long-time partners like the Nitto Pit Crew, capturing raw trail moments, and putting our brake technology to the ultimate test.

This event was more than just an off-road adventure; it was a gathering of passionate enthusiasts, united by a love for challenging trails and unforgettable experiences.

One of the biggest highlights? Watching Jose Vasquez (@mambaflex_jlu) tackle the legendary Metal Masher trail in his built rig—proving the power of an R1-equipped brake setup when the terrain gets technical.

🔥 Trail Conditions: Dust, Heat, and Lockers (Mostly) Working

Moab never disappoints. With 90+ degree temperatures and rugged climbs, the trails demanded control, consistency, and full confidence in every part of the build. One standout moment? Jose attempting a steep incline with no functioning rear locker—only to power through using grit, smart spotting, and total control at the pedal.

“No rear locker—it’s not grabbing. Took a couple tries and a bump… but we got it.”

Lockers are definitely recommended on Metal Masher, but skill and preparation can make up the difference when the gear isn’t cooperating.

🛠️ Build Spotlight: Jose Vasquez aka @Mambaflex_jlu

Jose rolled into Moab with a trail-proven, heavily upgraded rig—complete with aftermarket bumpers, armor, and serious weight. That added mass? A real challenge—until he upgraded his braking system with R1 Concepts.

The R1 Concepts brake kit arrived complete in-box, providing everything needed for a seamless install. The upgrade included larger calipers for improved performance and stopping power. Professionally installed prior to the event, the system delivered impressive results on the trail.

“I upgraded to R1 Concepts and instantly felt it—on-road and off-road, the difference is insane.”

Jose noted that the stopping power exceeded expectations—all while staying cost-effective compared to other performance options on the market.

His Setup:

These components are engineered to handle:

  • Steep, technical descents
  • High thermal loads
  • Long trail days with a fully-loaded rig

🎯 Why Brakes Make the Difference in Moab

Moab is no place for brake fade or second guesses. In unpredictable terrain, your brakes are your final line of control. That’s why so many off-roaders rely on R1 Concepts for trail-ready performance.

Our off-road braking systems are designed to:

  • Dissipate heat quickly
  • Maintain grip and friction under pressure
  • Provide confident braking with oversized tires and heavy builds

On Moab’s steep descents, reliable braking can prevent accidents, reduce fatigue, and make the entire ride more enjoyable.

When traction isn’t guaranteed, braking power must be.
