It is slow, it is technical, and it has a habit of humbling anyone who shows up overconfident. We spent a few days out there with a group of Toyota guys running from Buck Island through Soup Bowl and up Cadillac Hill, and the trip delivered exactly what the trail promises, including one rig that finished an obstacle upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wheeling In to Buck Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bailey and Kit set the tone early. It was a Thursday, the group was wheeling in toward Buck Island, and the plan was to camp, swim, cook and then meet a larger group at the springs the next day. That is the rhythm of a Rubicon trip. You cover far less ground than you expect and you spend more time helping each other than you do driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Season That Almost Did Not Happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the trucks in the group nearly missed the whole year. A cracked cylinder head back in May or June could easily have ended the season. A partnership with LS Engineering brought pro cylinder heads, gaskets and studs, and that saved it. By the time we caught up with him he had run the Rubicon three weeks in a row plus a Fordyce trip, and the truck was still going strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soup Bowl Does What Soup Bowl Does<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Soup Bowl is optional. That is worth repeating, because everybody does it anyway. It is one of the best little obstacles on the Rubicon and people line up to try it. One driver walked us through his approach, shifting into double low for traction and starting with just the rear locker so he could still steer, keeping the front locker in reserve in case he got stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And Then One Went Over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It did not take long. One rig rolled onto its roof, and the reaction tells you everything about this crowd. Nobody panicked. There was laughter, a couple of people admitting they had seen it coming, and then the group got to work. The trail stopped, people gathered, and the truck went back onto its wheels. That is the part outsiders tend to miss about this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-Timers and the People Who Bring Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Payton Brooks drove out from Oklahoma City, and the Rubicon was the first real wheeling he had ever done. He described driving in from LA expecting to relax and instead going straight at it. Year two is when it clicked, and he went home, found a Tacoma online at a good price, and started building it himself. He credits his older brother for the encouragement and for fielding an endless stream of questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Community Keeps People Coming Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The thread running through the whole trip was patience. Everyone out there had a built rig and far more experience, and they spent their time coaching rather than leaving anyone behind. One parent pointed out that it let them breathe easier watching their kid grow as a driver, knowing the group around them was a good one.
