The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size off-road<\/span> SUVs<\/span> that have been in continuous production since 1986. It\u2019s currently in its fourth generation, which entered production for the 2018 model year<\/span>. The 2014 Wrangler JK belongs to the third<\/span> generation, produced for the 2005 to 2017 model years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The JK was the Wrangler\u2019s first clean-sheet design for the body, frame and suspension. The most significant new features for this generation include electronically detachable sway bars for some trim<\/span> levels, power<\/span> windows, remote door locks and an on-board navigation system. The Unlimited model was also introduced in this generation, which has four doors and a longer wheelbase. This model was highly successful, accounting for \u00be of Wrangler\u2019s sales by the end of its third<\/span> generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-road Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The JK Wrangler is off-road<\/span> ready in stock form, incorporating new braking<\/span> features like an anti-lock braking<\/span> system (ABS) tuned for off-road<\/span> use and traction control with an electronic limited slip differential. Virtually all vehicle<\/span> functions are under software control except for steering, including engine, transmission and braking<\/span> to a lesser extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rubicon trim<\/span> is specifically designed for off-road<\/span> driving, largely due to its 32-inch Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM tires. These tires have an aggressive tread that grips rough terrain like rock and gravel. Standard equipment for the Rubicon trim<\/span> also includes Dana 44 axles in the front and rear, along with a four-wheel-drive<\/span> (4WD<\/span>) transmission that has a 4:1 transfer case<\/span>. Additional features of the Rubicon\u2019s transmission include a 4.10 axle gear, 8.8-inch ring gear and 32-spline rear axle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2014 Refresh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2014 model year<\/span> was a major refresh for the JK Wrangler, with off-road<\/span> changes like the addition of a Trail Kit. These items include a tow strap, two D-rings, gloves and a storage bag. The Rubicon X trim<\/span> is also available with a 32-inch Tire and Wheel Group, which includes 17-inch aluminum wheels<\/span> in semi-gloss black with BF Goodrich KM LT255\/75R17 off-road<\/span> tires. In addition, this trim<\/span> has off-road<\/span> steel bumpers in the front and rear that are winch-capable with removable end caps. Other off-road<\/span> features of the Rubicon X trim<\/span> include Mopar rock rails, red tow hooks, axle locker, sway-bar disconnect switches, axle locker, and Mopar slush mats.<\/p>\n\n\n

Aftermarket Braking Systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wrangler owners often experience problems with their stock brakes, especially when they go off-roading<\/span>. These problems generally relate to the accumulation of heat, which impairs the effectiveness of braking<\/span> systems in various ways. OEM brakes are designed for occasional braking<\/span> on a relatively flat surface. Aftermarket additions like larger wheels<\/span> and tires, steel bumpers, brush guards, roof racks and tire carriers can easily add hundreds of pounds to a stock Wrangler\u2019s curb weight. Off-road<\/span> vehicles also tow travel trailers in many cases, further increasing their braking<\/span> requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to taking longer to stop, common symptoms of overheating brakes include a soft or pulsating feel to the brake<\/span> pedal<\/span>. These signs are strong indicators that the braking<\/span> system lacks the thermal capacity to manage the load being put on it. Discs designed for off-roading<\/span> need to be larger, allowing them to distribute heat more effectively. They should also maximize the flow of air through them, which is essential for preventing overheating.
