2020 King of the Hammers: Johnson Valley, CA

This year’s King of the Hammers was filled with excitement. There were achievements, memories, obstacles — and even accidents! To say that there wasn’t a dull moment is an understatement. Not only were we able to develop an incredible volume of media with our brand partners, but we were also able to create long-lasting memories for the books.

Trail rides, BBQs, whipping through the dunes, campfires with friends and partners — a good time was had by all, and it would be accurate to say that it hardly felt like work.

But let’s take a look at the competition! Team GenRight Offroad came out ready for battle. To kick off the race season, we had not one, but two racers eager to chase that checkered flag. Tony and Jordan Pellegrino, father and son, were both registered and scheduled to race in the 4400 Unlimited class at King of the Hammers.

Even more exciting, Tony’s choice for race rig was the Terremoto: a street-legal JKU outfitted with an LS power plant, GenRight armor, and (of course) our very own R1 Concepts Big Brake Kit (6-piston front, 4-piston rear).

Jordan’s race rig, dubbed “The Unicorn,” shows that if you have an idea and the know-how, anything is possible. But what makes it such a unique and impressive build? It’s the design and execution of the independent front and rear suspension setup versus the usual solid axle setup. The Unicorn is an inventive and creative build, with every capability of going the distance. Powered by an LS, The Unicorn relied on our R1 Concepts Big Brake Kit (4-piston front and rear) to stop that beast of a motor.

Out of the 105 vehicles that started the race this year, only 44 were actually able to cross that finish line. Tony and the Terremoto crossed the line as the 32nd competitor that night. He proved that a well-built, street-legal Jeep could keep up with — if not outperform — a fully purpose-built race rig. And that shows the quality of parts from the brand are not only street proven, but race proven.

Jordan and The Unicorn, unfortunately, had a mechanical failure around mile 105. The rough terrain ended up being the cause of a heim joint failure in his suspension —something that can happen at any time. It’s something that you just can’t anticipate, but we all know that Jordan’s going to get everything fixed and saddle up for the next race.

We’re confident in Jordan not only as a racer, but as a builder, and we can’t wait to see him cross that finish line!
