Formula Drift, Round 1: Streets Of Long Beach 2015
April 10th & 11th, 2015
With Downtown Long Beach partially closed down, traffic building up with cars lined up to park, and crowds of people swarming their way to the never-ending line to get into the event, the stage is set for Round 1 of Formula Drift: “The Streets of Long Beach” to begin! Going into their 13th year since founding the drifting event, it is not an uncommon situation where there are standing room only tickets being sold on the final days leading up to the event until the day before they announce that Formula Drift has yet again SOLD OUT! With over 20,000 people in attendance, FD has definitely made its presence known.
In typical FD fashion, drama pursued with the top 4 not being any of the top contenders favorited to win the round. With underdogs taking out the top drivers: Tanner Foust, Forrest Wang, Chris Forsberg, Vaughn Gittin, and Dai Yoshihara. Forrest Wang finished as the top qualifier for the Top 32 the day before. Odi Bakchis, Matt Field, Ryan Tuerck, and Fredric Aasbo came in for the Final Four. With the final battle being between Aasbo and Bakchis, due to mechanical issues from Tuerck, Assbo came out on top and took the win for the first round of the 2015 season.
Outside of the smoke driven drifting event, with the city of Downtown Long Beach and the famous Aquarium being a backdrop, there was vendor alley and the Offset Kings Car Show. Miss Brittani Paige, Jessica Weaver, Erica Law, Cristal Aguirre, “Buff Daddy” Big Abe, and Miss Brittani Paige were at the R1 Booth signing posters and taking photos with the R1 Equipped Rocket Bunny Nissan R35 GTR and the Impressive Wrap Chrome BMW. The car show had plenty to stare at and admire, though the car that stood out most and grabbed the majority of the attention was the stance’d out Liberty Walk Ferrari 458 Italia right as you entered the show.
We look forward to another exciting Formula Drift season as they head to Atlanta, Georgia for Round 2 on May 8th and 9th.
